In this case study you will meet Maria – she’s a small business owner who was initially hesitant in signing up to Peru’s e-wallet app, BIM. But now she uses the service at business and home to pay bills, contractors and her taxes. Signing up was easy: all she needed was her cellphone and national ID number. In Peru, each citizen has a unique ID number provided through the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC), which uses biometrics, such as fingerprints, to authenticate a person’s identity.
Her story is a good example of the interoperability of digital ID systems which also ensure security. This video is part of the #EveryID Has A Story series from the World Bank’s ID4D initiative.
