Financial Inclusion

The course is intended for professionals who deal in some way with digital money platforms, fintech services or microfinance, and who have a need or desire to better understand how the sector contributes to improving the lives of lower-income or otherwise disadvantaged groups of people. We take multiple perspectives on how one can define, measure, and optimize for impact, based on whether you are a manager at a financial services provider, a policymaker, a donor, an impact investor, or an academic researcher.

After you have taken the course, you should:

  • Have a better sense of the state of research findings on the impact of financial inclusion on poverty reduction, business development, gender empowerment, etc.
  • Be more aware of the various research methods that are used to estimate such impacts, have developed a critical eye regarding them, and feel comfortable with reading research papers.
  • Feel like you have more tools to come to grips with questions of purpose, and to make decisions regarding the measurement of impact.

This is a four-week course, and it will be conducted entirely online through DFI´s Campus platform. Weekly teaching materials will center around four lecture videos of 10-12 minutes produced by DFI, and a number of additional resources that you can read or view. Your weekly tasks will include answering a discussion question, taking a multiple-choice quiz, and undertaking a personal exercise of a more practical nature.
