Digital Identity Interoperability and eInnovation

This case study addresses the issue of Digital ID interoperability, specifically in the internet context. It covers experiences in creating Digital ID interoperability to date, some of the forces that drive or inhibit the emergence of interoperability in Digital ID, the benefits and drawbacks of Digital ID interoperability as they relate to innovation, and  some potential paths forward. While mechanisms for technical interoperability have been developed, there remains significant additional barriers to interoperability. In particular, the continued ability and willingness of relevant people and companies to work together on technology and marketing will be crucial to the uptake of an interoperable Digital ID system. Such interoperability will most likely spur innovation as widely used Digital ID solutions enable new applications, as long as issues such as privacy and security will have to be adequately addressed. Download the case study here.
